NBA's Adam Silver says Las Vegas remain possible expansion target _ NBA Summer League _ Sports |
The NBA finds itself grappling with what has been described as "an impossible task" in creating its 82-game regular season schedule, according to a source involved in the process.
With
30 teams, each having unique preferences and varying internal perspectives, the
challenge lies in crafting a schedule that accommodates all. "Each team
has their own perspective on what they would like to see, and within each team,
there are multiple perspectives," the source explained. "The league
has to take all these views and try to create something that pleases everyone,
which is inherently impossible."
The
difficulty of this task has long been a hot topic within the NBA, as various sources
revealed to The Arizona
Republic. While the NBA doesn’t always achieve perfection, one
source pointed out that “the better teams often receive a favorable schedule,
while struggling teams tend to face tougher ones.”

NBA's
2024-25 Season Kicks Off with a Bang
The
2024-25 NBA regular season is set to commence on 22nd October, starting with an
exciting doubleheader. The Boston Celtics will receive their championship rings
before facing off against the New York Knicks at TD Garden. Later that night,
Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves will challenge LeBron James and
the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.
The
process of creating this grueling 82-game schedule spans 10 months, involving
hundreds of drafts. Work begins on opening night of the current season and
concludes with the schedule’s release in mid-August.
“They’ve
made significant progress in addressing past concerns, particularly around
player health, rest, and ensuring the league offers the best product on the
court,” said another source. The NBA strives to minimize injuries and optimize
performance, with each draft considering these factors.

The
Final Draft and Feedback Process
Teams
receive the final schedule draft one week before its public release and are
given a day to provide feedback. While some suggest giving teams the draft
earlier, the NBA must account for factors such as national TV games, arena
availability, free agency, and the draft. "It’s not like the schedule
needs major changes by the time teams see it," one source commented,
adding that the NBA's meticulous process ensures confidence in the final
version.
Representatives
from basketball, business, and medical teams offer feedback, which is then
communicated to the NBA. In return, the league provides detailed metrics that
help teams understand the schedule. "They provide data on factors like how
many back-to-back games you have compared to your opponents, which gives peace
of mind," a source said.
Adjustments
to Travel and Scheduling
NBA
teams generally prefer more weekend games, reduced travel during road trips,
and more home games towards the end of the season. The league has addressed
travel concerns by introducing the baseball-style format, where two teams play
consecutive games in the same city. "Trips are shorter now," a source
noted, highlighting that series games help minimize travel time.
Although
not everyone is a fan of the series format, many agree it's better than
multiple trips throughout the season. "They’ve become smarter with
geographical scheduling," another source added.
Balancing
the In-Season Tournament and Back-to-Backs
The
2024-25 season will see an increase in back-to-back games, rising from 13 in
2022-23 to 14.9. This is partly due to the introduction of the In-Season
Tournament, now known as the NBA Cup. Feedback from teams has indicated that
more back-to-back games impact player recovery time.
Some
suggest extending the schedule further into July to alleviate these issues, but
this would affect key offseason events such as the draft, free agency, and
summer league. "That would come with its own set of complexities," a
source remarked.
As
the NBA continues to navigate the complexities of schedule-making, the league
remains committed to balancing competition, player health, and fan engagement
in the ever-evolving basketball landscape.
